Russian defense minister: China-Russia military cooperation is top priority

BEIJING, Nov. 24 (ChnaMil) — General Sergey Shoigu, Minister of Defense of Russian Federation, said that the military cooperation between Russia and China will contribute to peace and stability on the Eurasian continent and beyond, and the cooperation is not directed against other states and does not pose a threat to them, the Russian Sputnik News reported on November 23.

Shoigu said, “In the context of political instability, it’s meaningful for Russia and China to express their willingness to maintain peace and strengthen international security. I’d like to point out that the bilateral military cooperation is not directed against other states and does not threaten them, but contributes to peace and stability on the Eurasian continent and beyond.”

He stated that the purpose of the military and military technical cooperation between China and Russia is “improving the potential for tackling modern challenges and threats, first and foremost international terrorism”.

According to Shoigu, Russia intends to enhance cooperation with China within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

He also showed a welcoming attitude to China’s willingness to hold a series of international military competitions in 2017. “This will be beneficial to expanding the geographical scale of the competition and boost its reputation,” said Shoigu.

He said that the relations between China and Russia is at an all-time high level and continues to expand steadily each year.”

“The regular meetings between the two countries’ leaders have provided necessary impetus to the development of a comprehensive strategic partnership as well as the relations in military areas,” said Shoigu.

Shoigu said, “In the meantime, Russia and China have made important decisions on bilateral and international agendas in various fields, including military and military technical cooperation. The two sides will focus on the implementation of agreements reached by the two countries’ top officials.”

He also stressed that it’s a top priority to expand cooperation between the two defense ministries.
